Every time you swipe your credit card outside the United States — or make an online purchase in a foreign currency — most issuers tack on a foreign transaction fee of 2.7% to 3%. How Foreign Transaction Fees Work
The fee is typically charged by the card issuer (not the network) and appears as a separate line item or built into the exchange rate. Cards marketed as “no foreign transaction fee” waive this charge completely. The currency conversion still uses the network's exchange rate (Visa/Mastercard rates are typically within 0.1% of the interbank rate).
